The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) plans to unlock the nation’s untapped mineral resources by issuing new regulatory policies within the next few months.

This was announced during a plenary session at the Mining Philippines 2025 Conference and Exhibition at the Grand Hyatt Manila on Wednesday (Oct. 22, 2025), by DENR Undersecretary for Integrated Science, Prof. Carlos Primo David.

In his presentation titled “Sustainability: Facets of Carbon Accounting”, he urged mining firms to comply with the new carbon accounting directive.

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), through the Mineral Economics, Information and Publication Division (MEIPD), successfully conducted a four-day Training-Workshop on Data Management and Analysis for Effective Data Compilation, Organization, Visualization, and Dissemination: From Data to Decisions, Empowering Insight Through Statistics on October 14–17, 2025, at Privato Hotel, Quezon City.

The workshop aimed to strengthen the technical capabilities of Regional Economists, Information Officers, IT Specialists, and MEIPD staff in managing, analyzing, and visualizing data using Microsoft Excel and Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, while at the same time sharpening their storytelling skills across platforms. The sessions covered topics from basic to advanced Excel, including data organization, data visualization, pivot charts and tables, dashboard creation, and automation using macros. A special presentation on AI and Google Gemini introduced participants to the use of AI-powered tools to enhance productivity, data storytelling, and digital communication.

In his message, Engr. Romualdo D. Aguilos, MEIPD Chief, emphasized that “this training is part of MGB’s continuous effort to empower its personnel to use data effectively for evidence-based decision-making and communication. By strengthening our digital and analytical skills, we ensure that our work remains relevant and impactful in today’s data-driven environment.”

Through hands-on activities, collaborative exercises, and expert-led discussions, participants developed practical competencies in data management, visualization, storytelling, and reporting—skills that are vital in effectively communicating the Bureau’s mineral and geoscientific information.

The activity reflects MGB’s ongoing commitment to digital transformation and capacity development, ensuring that its workforce remains responsive to the evolving demands of information management and public service.

AusIMM, the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, has appointed Philippine Mining and Exploration Association (PMEA) President, Joey Nelson R. Ayson as International Representative in the Philippines in May 2025.

The International Representative is a voluntary, appointed position by AusIMM, which is the peak professional body for people in the global resources sector.. The role entails that a Representative must be a current financial member of AusIMM residing in the country outside of Australia or New Zealand.

The Philippine Society of Mining Engineers (PSEM) Caraga Chapter reached a new milestone with the successful conduct of its 1st Caraga Mining Symposium held on August 22–24, 2025 at the Emerald Hall, Hotel Tavern in Surigao City.

Carrying the theme “Navigating Towards a Greener Environment, Resilient Mining Communities, and Good Governance,” the three-day event gathered professionals from the mining industry, government regulators, academic institutions, sponsors, and community representatives. It was the first time that Caraga—known as the country’s mining hub—hosted an event of this scale solely dedicated to mining engineers and allied professionals.

The symposium featured a full program of technical sessions, a mining exhibit, and knowledge-sharing forums. Discussions focused on the increasing importance of embedding Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles in day-to-day mining operations. Industry leaders emphasized that sustainability is no longer optional, but an operational imperative for companies that want to remain competitive and socially accepted.

Apart from the formal sessions, participants were also treated to a mine tour that offered a closer look at modern practices in safety, environmental management, and community engagement. To cap off the event, the chapter organized the Miner’s Gold Rush Fun Run, which brought together professionals, students, and community members in a lighter, more festive atmosphere.

More than just a technical gathering, the 1st PSEM Caraga Mining Symposium became a platform for partnership and dialogue. It underscored the industry’s shared responsibility to balance resource development with environmental care and social progress.

With its strong turnout and wide support, the Caraga Chapter’s inaugural symposium set a precedent. It not only celebrated the profession of mining engineering but also reaffirmed Caraga’s role as a vital contributor to shaping the future of responsible mining in the Philippines.

Prime Energy Resources Development (Prime Energy) reaffirmed its commitment to energy security through the Malampaya gas-to-power project, the country’s first and only indigenous natural gas asset.

Prime Energy President & CEO, Donnabel Kuizon Cruz, said the project, operated under Service Contract 38 in partnership with PNOC Exploration Corporation and Udenna Corporation, remains vital to ensuring Luzon’s energy backbone and delivering benefits to millions of Filipinos.

The Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) is set to hold a trade mission entitled “Australian Innovation for Sustainable Mining in the Philippines” from 17 to 20 November 2025, with events in Manila and Baguio.

According to the Commission, this mission presents a rare opportunity for Philippine mining companies to engage directly with Australian METS (Mining Equipment, Technology and Services sector), renowned for their expertise in sustainable mining practices and innovative technologies.

This mission aligns with Australia’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040, underscoring the importance of deepening economic ties and fostering collaboration around sustainable mining.

The Philippines is poised to make history as the first country in Asia to host the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) Global Conference, set for June 2026 in Manila. The milestone event will bring together over a thousand international stakeholders—ranging from government leaders and industry representatives to civil society and development partners—to chart the future of transparency and accountability in the extractive sector.

“This is more than just a hosting role,” said Undersecretary Bayani H. Agabin, the Philippines’ EITI focal person and chair. “It’s a declaration of our shared vision of transparency, accountability, and collaboration in managing our country’s natural wealth.”

The Department of Finance, through the PH-EITI Secretariat, will lead preparations with support from a multi-stakeholder community that includes civil society groups, reporting companies, and international development partners.

“Together, we’re showing how a whole-of-society approach can elevate the EITI Standard—not just here in the Philippines, but throughout the Global South,” Agabin said during the 63rd EITI Board Meeting.

The conference comes at a pivotal moment. Countries around the world are grappling with the urgent challenges of energy transition, anti-corruption reforms, and sustainable development. For the Philippines—an archipelagic nation on the frontlines of climate change—the event offers a critical platform to spotlight climate resilience and the principle of a “just transition.”

“Through this event, we want to explore how extractive industries can support a low-carbon future, ensuring that no community is left behind,” Agabin added. “We also hope to demonstrate how the 2023 EITI Standard can help combat corruption and foster informed, inclusive decision-making.”

Finance Secretary Ralph G. Recto echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the country's commitment to global leadership in good governance. “This reflects the Philippines’ firm resolve to lead by example in promoting transparency, strengthening accountability, and ensuring that our natural resources are managed sustainably,” Recto said in a global announcement.

The Philippines has a strong track record of hosting major international events, including the APEC Economic Leaders’ Summit, ASEAN summits, and Open Government Partnership regional meetings. The 2026 EITI Conference will also coincide with the Philippines’ ASEAN Chairmanship, further underscoring its role as a regional leader in inclusive and accountable governance.

According to Undersecretary Agabin, delegates can expect a professionally organized, culturally rich, and welcoming experience in Manila. “Filipino hospitality is second to none,” he said. “We are ready to host the world and make this a conference to remember.”

As host, the Philippines will also take an active role in shaping the conference agenda through an EITI Board Working Group, ensuring that the event addresses the real-world challenges faced by resource-rich nations.

PH-EITI has called on local stakeholders to join in the planning process, aiming to reflect the country’s priorities and further advance transparency and accountability in the extractive industries.

With preparations already underway, the 2026 EITI Global Conference is expected to elevate the Philippines as a key voice in global efforts to promote sustainable and responsible resource governance.

Last June 7 and 8, the Australian Embassy in the Philippines hosted the Philippines-Australia Friendship Festival at Glorietta Activity Center, Makati City.
“The Philippines-Australia Friendship Festival is a celebration of shared values, cultures, and the powerful connections between people from the two nations. The Festival celebrates the longstanding connection between Australia and the Philippines -- from the Manila Men of the 1800s to today's vibrant community of over 400,000 Filipinos living in Australia.” 

Electrification, automation, and digitalization were the core of a discussion in a mining luncheon early this year.

“There is no green future without mining in the present.”

This is a powerful statement coming from a presentation by Philippine Mining Club’s guest speaker, Dharamdev Rajwar, ABB’s Regional Sales Manager – Southeast Asia-Mining. He presented a report titled “Mining's Moment - The pathway for urgent real progress in responsible mining”. The report is a compilation of insights and survey from over 400 mining experts from around the globe, representing 18 countries.

On the first Philippine Mining Club Luncheon last February 28 at the Manila Polo Club in Makati City, Metals Exploration President and CEO, Darren Bowden, was the keynote speaker. His presentation was titled “Philippine Mining Industry on the Brink”.

Metals Exploration is a London-listed gold company operating the Runruno mine under its subsidiary, FCF Minerals Corporation. Bowden emphasized the urgent need for regulatory reforms in the Philippines in order to support the mining industry's growth. During his talk, he outlined the company’s turnaround story—rescuing FCF from bankruptcy in 2018 by refinancing $130 million on the following year, optimizing plant technology, and achieving over 90% gold recovery rates. Today, FCF is a debt-free, cash-generating operation that has posted strong production figures and won multiple safety and ESG awards.
