Issue 1

New year, new issue – that’s what you’ll get and more as you turn the pages of Issue 1 2024 of your Philippine Resources Journal.

We start off with profiling one of the most exciting construction developments to happen in the Philippines, the Metro Manila Subway Project, on our cover story on page 48. Our Editor, Jimbo Gulle, gives us a concise update on what to expect from the emerging transit system that should be fully operational in five years or by 2029, per government guarantees.

On page 6 our eminent lawyer-columnist Fernando “Ronnie” Penarroyo explains the crucial role of the Filipino geologist in national development. He expands on his keynote speech during the recent Geological Convention 2023 or GeoCon and lays out why geologists – like him – are essential in making people understand the riches and resources at our feet.

Our other eminent thought leader, the esteemed lawyer Patricia Bunye, zooms in starting on page 14 on the government’s latest pronouncements of support for the mining industry, having placed it among five key industries it wants to develop for the country. This was underscored by a recent agreement sealed by industry, government, and private leaders in Baguio City, and our author hopes it won’t become yet another unfulfilled promise as in past eras.

Finally, we punctuate our Issue 1 with a look back with the Philippine Mining and Exploration Association (PMEA), which marked its 25th or Silver Anniversary last December. Our intrepid reporter Marcelle Villegas sat down with PMEA President Joey Ayson to recall and reminisce how the group has grown to become a pillar of the local mining industry starting on page 36.
