DMCI Mining shipped 1.24 million wet metric tons (WMT) of nickel ore from January to June, an all-time high for the company and 45 percent higher compared to the 853,000 MWT shipped during the same period last year.

Of the total shipments, 718,000 WMT came from Berong Nickel Corporation (BNC) while Zambales Diversified Metals Corporation (ZDMC) contributed 522,000 WMT.

“This is the first time that both our mining assets are operating at full capacity. We expect shipments to remain strong in the second half since we were able to extend Berong’s mine life from June until Q3 this year,” said DMCI Mining president Tulsi Das C. Reyes.

Average nickel grade of the shipped nickel dropped from 1.37% to 1.39% while average selling price per metric ton rallied 57 percent from USD28 to USD44 owing to China’s surging stainless steel production, strong demand for electric vehicles and the continuing Indonesian nickel ore export ban.

“The uptrend in nickel prices is likely to continue in the coming months because of production-consumption gaps. Major nickel producers are seeing lower output because of COVID-19 lockdowns and various operating issues but industrial manufacturing is still ramping up,” Reyes added.

DMCI Mining revenues in the first half grew 123 percent from P1.2 billion to P2.7 billion. Including a nonrecurring income of P247 million mainly due to deferred tax liability remeasurement and 2020 income tax adjustment under CREATE Act, its standalone net income soared 409 percent from P241 million to P1.2 billion.

Nickel is mainly used in stainless steelmaking, but is also a vital ingredient for the lithium-ion batteries used to power electric vehicles (EV). The International Energy Agency estimates that global EVs will grow 14 times to 145 million by 2030.

DMCI Holdings posts record Q1 earnings: up 165% to P11.3B

Diversified engineering conglomerate DMCI Holdings, Inc. reported a 165-percent increase in first-quarter earnings from P4.3 billion to P11.3 billion, its highest ever for any given quarter. Its record-setting performance was mainly driven by the robust operating results of its coal, nickel and power businesses amid rallying commodities and electricity spot prices. Excluding a non-recurring gain of P179 million last year mainly from the deferred tax remeasurement impact of CREATE Act on Maynilad’s service concession asset and a P12 million gain on sale of land of DMCI Homes, consolidated core net income surged by 177 percent from P4.1 billion to P11.3 billion. “Semirara exceeded our expectations while DMCI Mining and DMCI Power both grew double-digits,” said DMCI Holdings chairman and president Isidro A. Consunji. “But our construction and real estate businesses are showing signs of slowdown because of knock-on effects of the pandemic and Russia-Ukraine war,” he added. Net income contribution from Semirara Mining and Power Corporation (SMPC) skyrocketed by 544 percent from P1.3 billion to P8 billion on the back of record-high coal production, shipment and average selling prices, and further boosted by higher spot electricity sales at elevated prices. DMCI Homes contributed P1.4 billion, a 7-percent decline from P1.5 billion owing to lower construction accomplishments, fewer new accounts that qualified for revenue recognition and higher sales cancellations. Net income contribution from DMCI Mining grew 20 percent from P415 million to P499 million on higher nickel ore shipment and forex rates. D.M. Consunji, Inc. recorded a 7-percent drop in net income contribution from P393 million to P367 million mainly due to the absence of a one-time related party transaction for a joint venture infrastructure project. Maynilad contribution rose by 11 percent from P287 million to P319 million on lower personnel, utilities and interest expenses. DMCI Power contributed P132 million, a 12-percent upturn from P118 million because of higher generation and sales across all its service areas. Income from parent and others retraced by 38 percent from P13 million to P8 million on lower interest income.

DMCI Mining Q1 core earnings at all-time high; Up 14% yoy to P543M

Photo credit: Bilyonaryo DMCI Mining Corporation recorded a 14-percent increase in first-quarter core net income from P477 million to P543 million, its highest for any given quarter. Revenues grew faster at 25 percent from P1.1 billion to P1.4 billion owing to higher nickel ore shipments and favorable foreign exchange rates. Despite the depletion of its Berong mine, DMCI Mining boosted its total shipments by 26 percent from 494,000 wet metric tons (WMT) to 620,000 WMT on the back of its robust beginning inventory of 389,000 WMT. “We had a very good start to the year. Unfortunately, without a second operating asset, it would be impossible to maintain our output,” said DMCI Mining president Tulsi Das C. Reyes. “Our main challenge now is securing the necessary permits to expand our operations,” he added. From January to March, total production plunged by 43 percent from 555,000 WMT to 318,000 WMT on the nil production of Berong Nickel Corporation (BNC) and 5-percent uptick in output of Zambales Diversified Metals Corporation (ZDMC), from 313,000 WMT to 318,000 WMT. Average selling price slipped by 5 percent from 1.37 to 1.30 as BNC sold lower-grade nickel amid higher shipments from ZDMC. DMCI Mining is looking to expand its mining operations by another 3,500 hectares, which have a potential nickel resource of over 200 million wet metric tons. Once fully permitted, these additional operating assets can sustain the company for at least 50 years.   Article courtesy of the Philippine Stock Exchange

DMCI Mining core profits up 8% to P542M in Q2; rises 11% to P1.1B in H2

Photo credit: Bilyonaryo DMCI Mining Corporation posted an 8-percent upturn in standalone second-quarter core net income from P502 million to P542 million as higher selling prices and stronger US dollar offset the combined impact of lower shipments and higher fuel costs. Including the impact of CREATE law last year, its standalone net income for the period contracted by 28 percent from P749 million to P542 million. “We are seeing some topline weakness because the depletion of Berong mine but with elevated nickel prices and steady production of our other mining asset, we think we can end the year strong,” said DMCI Mining president Tulsi Das C. Reyes. For the second quarter alone, DMCI Mining revenues declined by 20 percent from P1.5 billion to P1.2 billion. Average selling prices of nickel ore surged by 50 percent from US$42 to US$63 owing to global supply disruptions and strong China demand while the US dollar appreciated by ten percent against the local currency. From April to June, shipments plunged by 51 percent from 746,000 wet metric tons (WMT) to 367,000 WMT after production from sole operating asset Zambales Diversified Metals Corporation contracted by 24 percent from 328,000 WMT to 248,000 WMT. Consequently, DMCI Mining standalone topline for the first semester was flat at P2.6 billion while core net income rose by 11 percent from P979 million to P1.1 billion. Meanwhile, net income slipped by 11 percent from P1.2 billion to P1.1 billion with the adjustments made in 2021 relative to the CREATE law.   Article courtesy of the Philippine Stock Exchange

PBBM boosts transport sector thru big-ticket projects

Photo credit: Department of Transportation Several big-ticket infrastructure projects in the transportation sector have been approved or are already being implemented by the administration of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., the Department of Transportation (DOTr) reported Monday. In a statement, the DOTr said the Cebu Bus Rapid Transit Project, Davao Public Transport Modernization Project, EDSA Greenways, the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) West Extension, and the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) Cavite Extension are all ongoing as of March 9 according to the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA). These projects are among the 67 infrastructure flagship projects (IFP) that have been greenlit or are already underway out of the 194 high-impact projects under Marcos’ "Build Better More" program. In the rail sector, these approved and ongoing projects include the Metro Manila Subway Phase 1, Mindanao Rail Phase 1, Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) rehabilitation, Metro Rail Transit Line 4 (MRT-4), Metro Rail Transit Line 7 (MRT-7), New Cebu International Container Port, New Manila International Airport (Bulacan International Airport), North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR), Philippine National Railways (PNR) South Long Haul, and the Subic Clark Railway. The New Dumaguete Airport Development Project (Bacong International Airport) and the Integrated Flood Resilience and Adaptation (InFRA) Phase 1 have also both been approved by NEDA, with six projects awaiting approval. Last week, the NEDA Board, led by Marcos, approved 194 high-impact priority projects with a total cost of around PHP9 trillion. The board also approved amendments to the 2013 Joint Venture guidelines to support the government’s push for more investments in the country’s infrastructure. PNR suspension Meanwhile, Senate President Pro Tempore Loren Legarda has expressed alarm over an impending suspension of select PNR routes due to the NSCR, saying it will affect thousands of commuters, mostly students and workers. “The welfare of the riding public should always be prioritized yet it remains to be seen whether such proposed solutions would effectively and sufficiently address the riding public's urgent demands in time for the imminent suspension of the operations of the PNR,“ Legarda said in her explanatory note on Senate Resolution No. 546. The PNR plans to suspend operations of certain routes for up to five years to facilitate the faster construction of the 55-kilometer NSCR. The construction will start in May and PNR may suspend the routes between Governor Pascual in Malabon City and Calamba City in Laguna, and well as Alabang, Muntinlupa City to Calamba. The Tutuban, Manila-Alabang route will be suspended in October and will affect between 20,000 and 25-000 passengers daily. Legarda urged the Committee on Public Order, chaired by Senator Grace Poe, to look into the impending suspension and come up with alternative solutions.   Article courtesy of the Philippine News Agency

Celsius enters into initial binding deed and agreement with local companies to progress MCB Project

Photo: Signing of Binding Deed and Agreement (Left to right: PMR Holding Corp. President Dan Chalmers, CLA Chairman and MMCI President Atty. Julito “Sarge” Sarmiento, Sodor, Inc. President Ms. Erika Chalmers, and CLA Executive Director and MMCI Country Operations Director, Peter Hume). Celsius Resources Limited  is pleased to announce that on 17 March 2023 the Company’s wholly owned subsidiary, Makilala Holding Limited ("MHL"), entered into a binding deed with Sodor, Inc. for Sodor to acquire a 60% legal ownership in Makilala Mining Company, Inc. (“MMCI”) for consideration of PHP 300 million (approximately A$8.2 million as at the date of this announcement), on terms and conditions described in the following paragraphs. The signing of the Deed is a significant milestone as it will enable MMCI to apply for an MPSA for the MCB Project with the Philippine Government. As previously advised by the Company, under Philippine law, an MPSA must be held by a company that is at least 60% Filipino owned. In addition, the Company and its wholly owned subsidiaries MHL, MMCI, and PDEP Inc. (“PDEP”) entered into an accompanying binding letter agreement with Sodor and its affiliate PMR Holding Corp. (“PMR”) (together, the “Parties”) to agree on the timeline for, and that delivery to Sodor Inc. of share certificates representing 60% of MMCI’s outstanding shares pursuant to the Deed shall be made only after, the funding by Sodor Inc. and PMR of approximately ~US$43 million for a 30% economic interest in the MCB Project ("Funding Commitment"). 3 The MCB Project will be composed of MMCI and PDEP, both wholly owned subsidiaries of Celsius. The Parties shall rescind the Deed if Sodor and PMR are not able to provide the Funding Commitment within two years from signing, unless the period is shortened or extended by mutual agreement of the Parties. As at the date of this announcement the amount of the Funding Commitment, which is inclusive of the MMCI Consideration, is approximate as the Parties will confirm the size and timing of payment of the Funding Commitment following completion of a bankable feasibility study on the MCB Project. Provision of the Funding Commitment also remains subject to completion of negotiation and execution of binding definitive long form legal documentation. The Philippine Government has otherwise advised MMCI that it has met all of the other technical requirements to obtain the MCB Project’s required environmental and mining permits. Celsius Non-Executive Chairman and MMCI Chairman and President, Atty Julito R. Sarmiento, commented: “We are indeed honored to have Sodor Inc. as our local partner in our vision to develop the MCB Project as a model for Transformative Mining in the Philippines. Our principles and visions are aligned, which is a powerful step towards developing and operating the MCB Project in a responsible and sustainable manner benefitting both our shareholders and local stakeholders. It has always been our commitment, particularly to the Balatoc Tribal Community, that central to the mine development is cultural respect, social development, and environmental protection. Sodor Inc. shares the same commitment, and is thus a perfect partner in developing the MCB Project.”   Article courtesy of Celsius Resources. The full press release can be found HERE
