Hinatuan Mining Corp. – Tagana-an Nickel Project (HMC-TNP) highlighted its mangrove conservation efforts during a colloquium in Surigao del Norte organized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Community Environment and Natural Resources Office in Tubod.

The event, titled “From Roots to Resilience: A Colloquium on Science, Stewardship, and Sustainable Coastal Futures in Surigao del Norte,” was held in observance of the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, celebrated annually on July 27.

HMC-TNP marine biologist Jusua dela Peña presented the mangrove ecosystems of the Hinatuan Islands and Barangay Talavera, highlighting their ecological importance and the company's conservation, protection and rehabilitation initiatives.

Mangroves help protect coastlines against erosion and storm surges, provide habitats for marine life, support coastal livelihoods and strengthen communities’ resilience to climate change.

Dela Peña’s presentation emphasized the role of science-based environmental management and collaboration in protecting coastal ecosystems.

HMC-TNP also participated in a mangrove photo exhibition, submitting two entries titled “Cultivating Tomorrow’s Mangrove Legacy” and “Where the Roots Remember, the Future Rises.”

The company said sustained conservation efforts, science-based initiatives and partnerships with environmental stakeholders were central to preserving mangroves and supporting coastal resilience.

It added that mangrove protection was important not only for biodiversity but also for safeguarding coastal communities and supporting the well-being of future generations.
