Silangan Mindanao Mining Co., Inc. (SMMCI) has secured official approval from its Mine Rehabilitation Fund Committee (MRFC) for the company’s 2026 Annual Environmental Protection and Enhancement Program (AEPEP), reinforcing its commitment to responsible environmental stewardship and community accountability.
The presentation and deliberation of the 2026 AEPEP took place at the Pavilion area of the Silangan Project site, offering a panoramic view of ongoing operations and surrounding ecosystems — a fitting venue reflecting the company’s focus on transparency and sustainability.
The Silangan team was led by Project Lead Engr. Venancio Gel A. Romero, joined by key officials including Community Relations Manager Janrie Dudang, Corporate Environment Manager Alfa Moog, Government Liaison and Permitting Officer & Landbanking Manager Jose Herteodelus Bayana, Mine Division Manager Engr. Eduardo R. Garcia Jr., and Process Plant Construction Manager Engr. Danilo Gemao. The team presented the company’s environmental strategies, planned protection measures, and enhancement initiatives for the coming year.
The MRFC delegation was headed by Engr. Francis Glenn N. Suante, Chief of the Mine Safety, Environment, and Social Development Division (MSESDD) of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Regional Office No. XIII, serving as committee chairperson. Members included local government officials such as Hon. Jovymarie C. Villazon, Municipal Mayor of Placer, and Hon. Cezar Ian B. Diaz, Municipal Mayor of Taganaan, as well as Andrew Imboy, Sangguniang Bayan Member of Tubod. Other attendees were Ma. Arceli T. Napalan, Executive Director of Reach Foundation, Atty. Rise Faith Recabo from the Provincial Government, For. Celeste N. Paler of DENR Caraga, and Engr. Julius Caesar T. Lacanaria, leader of the Silangan MMT.
The multi-sectoral composition of the MRFC, which includes government representatives, NGOs, and community leaders, underscores the shared responsibility for safeguarding the environment and ensuring corporate accountability. Committee members reviewed the proposed programmes, highlighting the importance of measurable actions and ongoing monitoring.
