Nickel Asia becomes first Philippine mining company with SBTi-validated net-zero targets

Nickel Asia Corporation (NAC), the Philippines' largest producer of lateritic nickel ore and a growing player in renewable energy, has become the first mining company in the country to receive validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets.

The validation confirms that NAC's GHG emissions reduction targets are aligned with climate science, with targets to reduce absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 42% by 2030, and Scope 3 emissions by 37.5% by 2035, from a 2024 base year.

"This is a significant achievement for all of us at NAC, as we join thousands of global companies that have received SBTi validation for climate commitments aligned with the United Nations' Paris Agreement to combat climate change," said NAC Senior Vice President for Sustainability, Risk, External Affairs, and Communications and Chief Sustainability Officer Jose Bayani Baylon.

SBTi's independent assessment recognizes NAC's commitment to setting meaningful and measurable emissions reduction targets that support climate action across the organization.

Developed through the collaboration of Mine Operations, the Mining Center of Excellence and Technical Operations, Mining Compliance, the Procurement Center, Corporate Finance, and the Sustainability Center, these targets are supported by NAC's ongoing development of its second-cycle Sustainability Roadmap, which outlines actions to reduce emissions across its operations using data provided by process leads from all business units.

NAC aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, with interim targets for 2030 as defined in its Sustainability Roadmap. These commitments include engaging value chain partners to advance climate action and support the transition to a low-carbon future.

According to NAC Assistant Vice President for Sustainability Edwin P. Nerva, "We've worked long and hard to reach this milestone."

"Each one of us at NAC plays an important role in this collective effort—embedding sustainability in our operations, engaging our communities, collaborating with suppliers and business partners, and creating long-term value for all our stakeholders. This is just the beginning," Nerva said.

The SBTi is a corporate climate action organization that enables companies worldwide to set emissions reduction targets in line with the latest climate science and the goals of the Paris Agreement.

NAC is a diversified natural resources development company in the Philippines with a portfolio that includes six operating nickel mines, a 10% stake in the Taganito HPAL project, and a rapidly growing renewable energy subsidiary.
