Carrascal Nickel turns over P1.3-M food-for-work projects in Surigao del Sur villages

Carrascal Nickel Corporation (CNC) has turned over P1.3 million worth of food-for-work projects to two barangays in Carrascal town to support community clean-up activities, food security and livelihood opportunities.

The turnover ceremony was held on June 17 for Barangay Babuyan and Barangay Embarcadero, with the projects funded through the company's Social Development and Management Program (SDMP).

Under the initiative, Barangay Babuyan received P1 million, while Barangay Embarcadero was allocated P300,000 to implement community-based clean-up and environmental maintenance activities.

CNC said the Food for Work for Community Clean-Up program is designed to provide continuous livelihood support for residents while encouraging active participation in maintaining the cleanliness of their communities.

The company added that the program also helps address food security concerns, particularly during periods when household income is lower, by providing assistance tied to community service activities.

According to CNC, the initiative promotes environmental responsibility while creating opportunities for residents to contribute to local development efforts.

The mining company said the project aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 2, which aims to end hunger, achieve food security and improve nutrition.

By supporting community-based activities during off-season periods, the program seeks to strengthen household resilience and provide additional income opportunities for families, helping them meet their food needs and improve overall food security.

CNC is a nickel mining company operating in Carrascal, Surigao del Sur. The company is engaged in the extraction and shipment of nickel ore and implements community development programs through its SDMP, a mandatory program under Philippine mining regulations that allocates funds for the socio-economic development of host and neighboring communities.

The company has been supporting projects in education, health, infrastructure, livelihood, environmental protection and capacity-building as part of its commitment to responsible mining and sustainable community development.

CNC said it remains committed to implementing programs that promote community welfare, environmental stewardship and inclusive growth in its host communities while ensuring that mining benefits are shared with local stakeholders.

The company continues to fund various SDMP projects aimed at improving the quality of life of residents and supporting long-term development initiatives in Surigao del Sur.
