Silangan Mining Conducts Interdisciplinary Audit to Strengthen Mine Oversight

By: Philippine Resources September 15, 2025

Silangan Mindanao Mining Co., Inc. (SMMCI) has reaffirmed its commitment to responsible mining by conducting its latest interdisciplinary audit of underground operations earlier this month.

Held on September 3, the monthly audit brought together technical experts, department heads, and managers from across the company to review every critical aspect of mining activities. Instead of looking only at technical results, the audit was designed to be holistic, covering safety and health, engineering, ventilation, mine support, geotechnical stability, environmental management, worker welfare, and finance.

A collective approach

Unlike routine inspections, SMMCI’s audit encourages collaboration and open dialogue. Teams were divided according to their specialization, enabling focused field inspections. Afterward, everyone reconvened to present findings and exchange recommendations.

Project Lead Engr. Venancio Gel A. Romero presided over the consolidation of results and guided the technical discussions. He highlighted how bringing different disciplines together makes the process more effective.

Romero explained, “The value of collective expertise lies in identifying improvements that contribute to both efficiency and safety in mine operations.”

More than compliance

The audit is not just about ticking boxes. By holding regular reviews, SMMCI aims to identify potential risks early and ensure progress is measured against internationally recognized mining practices.

Organizers stressed that the process goes beyond technical oversight. It is also a way to foster dialogue across departments and to build a culture where safety, sustainability, and accountability are part of everyday operations.

Responsible mining in practice

SMMCI said the monthly audits form part of its operating culture, reflecting its belief in “right and responsible mining.” The company emphasized that internal reviews are essential not only for meeting project milestones but also for protecting its workforce and ensuring that surrounding communities benefit from safe and sustainable practices.

By combining technical rigor with open communication, SMMCI’s audit system demonstrates how the mining industry can balance productivity with social and environmental responsibility.
