Weir has signed a strategic collaboration agreement with MINEXXT Inc. to push forward sustainable solutions in thickened and paste tailings management, a move that underscores the company’s drive to remain a global leader in the field.
Under the agreement, Weir will integrate MINEXXT’s patented thickening technology into its global tailings portfolio. The innovation is designed to improve performance in managing thickened and paste tailings, helping mining operators achieve safer, more efficient, and more sustainable outcomes.
Executives from both companies said the partnership represents more than a business deal—it’s about leveraging complementary strengths to solve one of mining’s toughest challenges.
“Collaborating allows innovative companies such as Weir and MINEXXT to access a broader and more knowledgeable resource pool,” said Mike Cook, managing director of MINEXXT Inc.
“By combining our extensive experience with advanced technologies, we can deliver proven and practical solutions that help clients optimize their operations," Cook added.
Erik Vlot, Weir’s global tailings process director, agreed with Cook's statement, saying that the value of this cooperation lies in gaining access to world-class thickening technology.
“Thickening will remain an essential part of tailings flowsheets, and MINEXXT’s patented feedwell technology helps address the challenge of handling fines and ultra-fines," Vlot said.
Early collaboration projects are already underway in Australia and Kazakhstan, with both companies expecting more opportunities to follow as the relationship deepens.
The partnership reflects a shared commitment to smarter, more sustainable approaches to tailings management—an area of increasing importance as the mining sector faces mounting environmental and regulatory pressures worldwide.
Managing mine tailings—the waste materials left after ore processing—has become one of the biggest challenges in modern mining. Beyond the safety risks of dam failures, tailings carry major environmental and regulatory pressures for companies worldwide.
Against this backdrop, engineering giant Weir has signed a strategic collaboration agreement with MINEXXT Inc. to advance sustainable solutions in thickened and paste tailings management.
Founded in 1871, The Weir Group PLC has grown into one of the world’s leading engineering businesses, employing about 12,000 people across more than 50 countries. Its technologies help mining and infrastructure customers produce essential resources with less energy, water, and waste, while lowering costs.
With demand for metals critical to economic development and the global energy transition on the rise, Weir is positioning itself at the forefront of sustainable mining innovation.
